Description

Comet C/2014 Q2 Lovejoy through clouds. A single five-second ISO 12800 exposure with Sony A7s and Canon EF 200/2.8L on iOptron Skytracker.

This season seems to be cursed. Even when the eternal-like cloud cover breaks for a moment, something else makes life harder.

I'd decided to check a small gravel pit some 15km north of the city of Lahti in hopes of finding a remote wind protected site without too much light pollution. Unfortunately the road leading there had too much snow on it and I didn't want to risk getting stuck.

As my favourite dark site, Pulkkilanharju, was just some 20 minutes away, I decided to go there. That would be good for both comet watching and testing whole-sky mosaic making!

Bad choice.

It was way too windy there. And wind combined with freezing weather doesn't make for a good astrophotography session.

When I got there, some clouds already began to gather in the sky. Freezing wind made setting up all the equipment almost impossible. Exposing for more than ten seconds was impossible.. And as setting up the equipment took so long, even the moon had time to rise from the horizon.

All in all, one of the most frustrating sessions I've had.
